In this tutorial I am going to show you how to cure a Windows Virus with a Ubuntu Live CD. I did this using Ubuntu 8.04 but can be done using any version of Ubuntu.

  • Step 1: Boot up your Ubuntu Live CD then navigate to system > administration > software sources > Make sure all 5 checkboxes are checked > click close > Reload

After you click on the Reload button Ubuntu will now download all the latest software packages

  • Step 2: Open up the Terminal (applications > accessories > terminal) and type
    sudo apt-get install clamtk

Type Y to continue with the installation when asked

The download and installation time will vary depending on your internet connection.

  • Step 3: To Start Clamtk you can either type gksu clamtk at the terminal or navigate to applications > system tools > virus scan

  • Step 4: Once clamtk is running go to > file > reccursive scan > choose your drive (C:) and click OK. The virus scan will now begin.

  • Step 5: After you start the scan just sit back and relax because the scan will take some time. Once an infection is found you will be given a list of options on what you want to do, like quarantine or delete the virus.

Once the scan is complete and all viruses are removed restart your PC

Definitely great way to remove a virus. Form what I can see, you are right madmatt. This is just clearly reading the files, not actually executing anything from the Windows Partition.
