Well I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC last night and had a Flawless install. Since I don't have another Linux class to take until Spring, I decided to get rid of Fedora :( I thought about it for a while, (because Fedora kinda grows on you) booted up 9.10 from Live CD, played around with it for a bit more, went to read on the Ubuntu Forums for a while, then I decided to give it a go. In this Article posted by Uncle Fester it said that only 10% of folks have a flawless install or upgrade. But I beg to differ with those numbers now since the poll looks like this:

576 people 17.44% - Upgrade - worked flawlessly
646 people 19.56% - Upgrade - worked but had few things to fix, nothing serious though
574 people 17.38% - Upgrade - got many problems that i've not been able to solve
533 people 16.14% - Install - worked flawlessly
551 people 12.78% - Install - worked but had few things to fix, nothing serious though
422 people 16.69% - Install - got many problems that i've not been able to solve

You can do the calculations yourself but it seems that 65.93% of people haven't really had any problems. I guess Ubuntu 9.10 isn't so bad after all :D

That's good to see, Ubuntu is a great os and I hoped these teething problems would iron themselves out. Some great new features in this release - going to try out the new server release soon, the two together should really rock.

Waiting for the new Mint release too...

Mint is just right around the corner from a new release. There is an RC1 on distrowatch.com that I am thinking about checking out. My brother is a big fan of Mint and he can't wait for 8

I have the RC, but trouble installing - this was the torrent d/l but as I write am d/ling the iso from one of the mirrors. Love Mint - use it myself quite a lot, also I use it on a lot of older PCs I donate out - for new users (and I'm one of them myself so know of what I speak) Mint is definitely the best distro - never had to open the terminal for standard installs. Driver support excellent and updating a breeze - can't sing it's praises enough - they take Ubuntu and then add a certain something. Used to be a big fan of PClinuxOS (still am really), but like the gnome desktop and debian base - can't wait to see the new version.

Non-Linux users (or tried it with bad experiences) should give it a go - LiveCD good but I've been dual-booting (now tri-) for a while and no probs. Coming from a man who changes oses more often than his underpants (not really mum) that is high praise indeed.

can you run AutoCad on this O/S easily and connect to a windows domain? would it be faster then an XP PC running AutoCad?

That's a good question - would have to use Wine or similar emulator as AutoCad only in Windows, wouldn't know about the performance due to demands from Wine. Joining AD domain a breeze - Pirate's probably your man for the technical niceties but have done it in the past - Joined my work workgroup (xp, Win 7 and Vista) straight away, even picked up shares and printers instantly!

I have never had a problem with the file sharing within a workgroup, or joining Ubuntu to a Domain. 9.10 actually has this little program called Active Directory membership that makes joining a Windows Domain a breeze.

As far as running AutoCad under Wine, personally I have never tried it, so I guess there would be a 50/50 shot of it working. Testing would obviously be the only way to know for sure There is actually an open source "AutoCad" program called Open Cascade for Windows and Linux. Don't know too much about it, but it might be worth looking into.
