that is the hard drive.
the light goes on, but i hear no noise from a fan or anything like i used to hear. the light goes off, it basically shuts down when i connect it to my laptop.

the warranty allows me to get another one from them, but they won't retrieve memory for me. i'm staring to think i omega is shady because they directed me to their memory retrieval site... found here...

http://www.iomegadatarecovery.com/

what should i do? i have family pictures on there and i was dumb enough to not save it somewhere else, i was waiting to do it the other day, and just my luck it won't work...

Welcome to PCHHQ :)

do you need to give them the broken drive back?

the good news is it looks like it has a standard desktop PC hard drive inside the enclosure if you can use a screw driver I could guide you on how to try remove the hard drive and temporary put it in your desktop PC to get the data back. Have ever worked on the inside of a PC before? or we could remove it and put it in a standard enclosure also to try get data back

thx for the welcome! were you the guy from yahoo answers who sent me the link?

anyways, i have to send them the the entire external hard drive back, but the rep i talked to suggested i do memory retrieval before i return it to them because they will replace it entirely.

i have not worked on the inside of a pc very much. but me and my dad did take the bottom of my hp pavilion laptop out to see what was underneath, just unscrewed it from below.

the rep never really did explain what happened to the hard drive though. i didn't even do anything to it... just tried to use it one day and it doesn't work ;/

No problems yep I'm the guy from Yahoo :D one other question have you tried this drive on another PC just to confirm it's not related to your PC before we start. Do you think you would be able to remove the drive from it's casing?

it does not work on a siblings macbook, nor does it work on another siblings hp pavilion, same as my laptop, but newer model. the rep hinted at it being a battery/power problem with the external hard drive, that is why they are sending me a new one once i send them back this one.

as far as taking it apart: there are two places to screw, and 2 only, on the side. the picture on amazon shows the side with a lot of dots, it is on the other side of this.

what I'd do is remove the 2 screws and see if the insides slide out of the outer casing and see what type of hard drive it has in it it will be SATA or IDE type once we work this out we have a choice of putting it into another enclosure or put it inside the PC to recover the data. The cheapest way is to put it inside another PC as a second drive because we don't need to buy a new enclosure to put it in. from the sound of it if the rep is saying power problems this has a good chance of just working when the hard drive plugged in directly.

IDE will look similar to this Posted Image

SATA like this Posted Image

see the connectors one has pins the other is a flat connection

Ah its a Samsung SATA drive HD502HI EcoGreen F2 this is it http://www.samsung.c...78&model_cd=439 once we get it out it should be easy to put in a desktop PC to see if we can read the data.

P.S I don't know if this will effect your warranty

OK I'll wait for your post hope it's OK to do this it's easy your being directed by a PC tech with 25 years experience so they have no need to worry :D once we know we are OK to do this and the drive is out of the enclosure it 2 plugs to hook it up to a desktop so very easy to do

okay the rep today said it will not affect my warranty. i just have to put it back together after i take the memory out.

so i just unscrew it, take the drive out and connect it to a pc? i don't think i have all those wires and stuff though...

btw, why do places charge 50-1,000 dollars for such a simple process?

i will try this later tonight.

i'll update when i am done.

if you check inside your PC see if the CD/DVD ROM has the same leads attached and disconnect those ones and connect them to the drive then boot the PC up it should appear under my computer as a drive letter possibly E drive or next available drive letter. If you get stuck take a few photo of the inside of your PC and we could get the right lead for a few dollars. The drive may work right away or we may need to run some additional software if it's damaged

I have never been to a motor mechanic in my life I do all my own you may ask why? because I know it's done properly there are some dodgy trades people out there that say they know it all but many don't

That would be great if you can let us know. We may need to install additional software if the is problems accessing the drive but hopefully it works right away like normal :D

ugh, its actually harder than it looks...

i unscrewed the 2 sides. then i got the part that looked like the amazon pictures. but after that i'm lost. i have a desktop computer, and took it apart looking for a place to the plug the external hard drive. i dont' really know what to do... are you sure the iomega prestige as seen on the amazon link is like the diagram you showed me? i can't find places to plug it.
