Hi,
I have been using Microsoft Internet Security for about 1 month without problems. Lately, sometimes, (1 in 3) when I boot my computer I find that the icon for Microsoft Internet Security is red and I get an error message from Windows XP that I don't have an active antivirus. A right click, open and clicking start fixes the problem. I read elsewhere I needed to auto start some programs in services which I have done but I still get the problem sometimes. Please offer suggestions to help with this as I am online for a minute or so before I have a working antivirus program when it happens.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Bob

Hi Bob welcome to PC help headquarters :D that one is not so good being from Microsoft you would think it would be great! I would uninstall it and download the latest one here http://www.microsoft...ls/default.aspx but these 2 programs would be much better to run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware download here http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and avast! Free Antivirus here http://www.avast.com...ivirus-download they are both 100% free! if you like paid products I have other suggestions

Hi,
Thank you for your reply, I did originally download my program from the link you gave, I run Malwarebytes, and spyware blaster with Comodo firewall. Every thing I have read about Microsoft Internet security (I have read a fair bit) has been very positive of the program. I am very happy with it with the exception of this hick up. I have uninstalled it twice, run Ccleaner and rebooted then reinstalled with the same result. If you can offer no other assistance i will just suffer the times that I must manually start it and hope that I am not infected while waiting for it to start. I may even stop the automatic connection to the internet until it is loaded.

Again, Thank you for you reply.

Hello Bob Hew,

You may be getting this error as it looks like you are running a few different programs to protect your pc. As long as you are keeping your antivirus stuff upto date manually, you could disable this notification.

This site has a great tutorial on how to prevent the icon from popping up: http://www.depts.ttu...SP2_install.php

Let me know how this works,

Hi,
I am running Microsoft Internet Security, Malwarebytes, spywareblaster with Comodo firewall. I am not having a problem with the popup the problem is that Microsoft Internet Security sometimes fails to start. It appears in the task bar in red and needs to be manually started.
I believe that I am running the best free protection available so unless someone can convince me that there are better free programs out there I will continue with these programs.
In summery, everything works well other than the need to manually start Microsoft Internet Security sometimes.

Hi again,
I assume that as I have not had another reply that you do not have an answer to my problem. Therefore I will just keep starting it manually when necessary and turn off automatic connection of my internet to ensure that I don't get an infection while I am online when the Microsoft Internet Security program will not start with windows.
Thank you for your troubles, sorry to have wasted your time.

Bob we still have lots of suggestions other staff are offline right now we are in different time zones and countries. We will look into this further so please check back we have a very talented team here. Also are you running service pack 3 and all current updates? another question is there any errors in your event viewer logs related to this? if so please post them. Also have you tried a system restore to a time before this happened? I noticed you mention it happen recently.

Hi again,
I have Service pack 3 fully updated with fully updated drivers and software. I would not know where to look now in the error log so I will wait till I have the problem again at boot and look then, if there is a report I will post it then.
I try to run a very lean machine with only the essentials for what I do off and online, There are no unnecessary programs starting at boot or windows start up. I keep my hard drive clean and defragmented, empty temp Internet folders, history etc every few days and use Ccleaner about once a month.
If there are any other questions please post and I will be only too happy to answer.

Microsoft Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP3 32bit
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2.01GHz 1.37GB RAM
No video card, DVD R/W drive (IDE connection) Sata 160GB drive in 2 80GB partitions, 1 for OS and the other for backups. Over 50 GB free on both partitions.

here is how to check the logs we will want to look at the time of the error and post the one near the start up time.

How to View Event Logs
To open Event Viewer, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. Or, open the MMC containing the Event Viewer snap-in.
2. In the console tree, click Event Viewer.

The Application, Security, and System logs are displayed in the Event Viewer window.

How to View Event Details
To view the details of an event, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. Or, open the MMC containing the Event Viewer snap-in.
2. In the console tree, expand Event Viewer, and then click the log that contains the event that you want to view.
3. In the details pane, double-click the event that you want to view.

The Event Properties dialog box containing header information and a description of the event is displayed.

To copy the details of the event, click the Copy button, then open a new document in the program in which you want to paste the event (for example, Microsoft Word), and then click Paste on the Edit menu.

To view the description of the previous or next event, click the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW.

Hi again,
I obviously didn't make myself clear. What I was saying is that as it only happens 1 in every 3 or 4 times and as a lot of information is stored in the log, I would not know where to find that information now as I am not sure the last time it happened. When it happens again I will check the log and post if there is a report. I looked at the log before I posted to you earlier and I could not see anything then but a report of it actually starting and a look at any red errors were for different problems at different time to boot up.

ok I wonder if something in start up is giving this problem give this a shot

1. Click on Start
2. From the Start Menu Options choose Run
3. Type “msconfig” without quotes and click okay. This will bring up System Configuration Utility
4. System Configuration Utility >> Click the tab called Startup
6. Now you can uncheck any programs unrelated to Microsoft Internet Security
7. Once you are done unchecking Click Ok and you will be prompted to restart your computer

reboot a few times do you still have this issue? if not add the items back 1 by 1 and reboot until the problem occurs so we can target the startup program that maybe causing this error

OK, I disabled everything other than MSI and booted 5 times and the first two it stalled then loaded then two without a pause then a pause again. Enabled everything (not 1 at a time)and booted 5 more times but this time it booted without pause 4 out of 5. I think it is like going to the dentist, the tooth won't hurt when you are there. I will leave it until it happenes again on boot, maybe tomorrow morning, and then check the log again. I will post back with whatever results after a failed start.
Thank you for your time.

OK, I had to reboot after my web cam froze and on boot I had the same problem of MIS not starting. Here is the log for that start up with two warnings that I don't understand and then the result of me manually starting MIS after the security center warning that it was turned off.

Could you please send me a screenshot of what the program looks like? Is this Microsoft Internet Security or Microsoft Security Essentials?
