ok this could be a hardware fault which is not good but really the only way to know this for certain is if we check the computer can see the DVD drive in it's BIOS what is the model number of the HP so I can look a few things up and then show you what to check.

We need to go in to the laptops bios you do this by tapping F10 key at power on. It will open the BIOS program In there we need to check if it see's the DVD drive. If you can't find it in there take some pictures of the screen so I can guide you where to check if you can't find it. There are no pictures of this at HP for me to direct you. IF it don't see the DVD drive in there the laptop has a fault

digital camera is the only way to take them of the bios screens. When you tap the F10 key it's going into the BIOS hey?

OK I need to look in to this further you should be able to navigate around the BIOS with your keyboard to display different settings. Any chance you could take a photo of the screen so I know what I'm looking at and possibly direct you to the right place to check in the BIOS.
