Hi, a vexing question that I have researched a bit but keep on hitting a brick wall. I have an ASUS P5GC-MX mobo, but cannot get the onboard LAN to work, have tried a number of separate PCI cards too but to no avail, although when I use an old wireless dongle I get a connection! Have updated the BIOS and drivers, even changed OS (Win XP, Win 7 and PCLinux) but still no joy. It seems to be a recurrent problem with this model, according to the various threads I have read elsewhere. Anybody got an idea how to get round this? Don't want to use wireless, like the hardwired network. Many Thanks

What are in your PCI and PCI Express slots?

Also, give this a shot:
Turn off the pc, unplug the power cable, and open the case up. You should see the RTC RAM jumper in the bottom right corner that has 3 pins. (This should be labeled on the circuit board too)

Erase the RTC RAM
  • Remove the CMOS battery.
  • Move the jumper cap from pins 1-2 (default) to pins 2-3. Keep the cap on pins 2-3 for about 5 to 10 seconds, then move the cap back to pins 1-2.
  • Re-install the battery.
  • Plug the power cord and turn ON the computer.
  • Hold down the <Del> key during the boot process and enter BIOS setup to re-enter data.

Bios Configuration
  • In the BIOS, navigate to the Advanced tab on the top using your keyboard
  • On this tab you should see: Onboard PCIEX 10/100Mb LAN. Make sure this is enabled.
  • On the same tab (Advanced) you should also see: LAN Option ROM, right below Onboard PCIEX 10/100Mb LAN. Make sure this is Enabled too.
  • Press F10 to Save and Exit. Make sure you save your changes.
  • Boot into whatever operating system and see if it can detect the Onboard network port.

If it can't find it, try installing the latest drivers too. If you would like, tell me what operating system you are running and I can get you a direct link to the drivers :)

Hope this helps!

Been away all weekend. Thanks for your help, sorted finally - had already done all the above and had the NIC in Device Manager just not connecting right. Was doing my head in as when I Googled it discovered a lot of owners had similar probs but no completed solution available. Anyway, feeling a bit sheepish - part of the problem my IP (virgin) modem playing up and not playing the DHCP/DNS game too brightly, the other was that somehow IPv6/Teredo had been turned on (don't remember doing that!) and that was upsetting the apple cart somewhat. Mea Culpa I suppose, but thanks for the input, most considerate of you.

Now that little problem sorted (must remeber to check the simple things) on to the next project - a couple of Linux servers - one for me (file server) and one for the charity I work for (domain) - that'll be fun.

Will be introducing these pages around - got quite a lot of contacts in IT up here in Edinburgh, so will buzz you up. Hope I can help some people out myself along the way - with my job you experience some real doozies (really bizarre) and have some novel tweaks (when I'm thinking straight).

Cheers...All Sorted :D

Hope you had a good break on the weekend :D good news to hear you got the problems sorted out routers/modems can be very fussy. Linux servers mmmm.... what flavor of Linux are you going to put on the servers? We are considering run this site on our own Linux webserver at some point in the future. Pirate07 seems to know a lot about Linux he's a Linux fan and I like it too but still learning cause I'm a windows man

It is on a Linux webserver, just thinking of getting a dedicated server for myself :P

I'm a windows bod too, but got a book on transferring knowledge - interesting. Currently I'm toying with PCLinux - which is a great distro for beginners, runs as a live CD but also auto-installs if required (also can be handy for repairing NTFS partitions). Looking to meet my local Linux users group thru Software Freedom Day (this saturday - see www.softwarefreedomday.org), already spoke to one or 2 - they use Ubuntu. Setting up a 'net cafe in a local church/youth club so money is an problem - hence the Linux server idea. Also, like Pirate07 I'm looking at a Linux server for myself - file and maybe web too.
Anyway, it's past midnight here, got a meeting in the morning so off to bed. Got another project in the pipeline which I'll explain another time on the community thread, might be a good idea to spread, speak about it anon... B)
